FOOTBALL TEAMS 1990s

Glasgow (South) could generally rely on being humbled on the football pitches of Crusader tournaments. But what chance did we have? This was a group of boys whose soccer skills were honed among the cow pats and ankle breaking ruts of Polnoon's farm land.

The inadequacies of tactics such as some old guy shouting 'cover' and 'spread it wide' were quickly exposed on any moderately flat surface. Even the change to trainers or football boots from Doc Martins and Wellies failed to enhance the deft touches of our boys - a 'deft touch' at Polnoon being the ability to hoof the ball 50 yards across the field and outrun the pack around you to the ball before hoofing it another 50 yards...etc

What about an article about the all conquering 5-a-side team that won the Scottish Crusader indoor title in the 80's, 83-84 maybe.

I can't quite remember who was all in the team but the gaffer was Jim Stewart. I played left back and body checked anyone that even looked like they wanted to get close to our goal. In nets it might have been Brian "the cat" Gregg. John Mowat was the midfield maestro. Iain Johnston was the impact player off the bench. But who else played? Boydie-boy, Eddie Anderson, McD? It couldn't have been Andy Hunter 'cos he's a third year punter ;)
